The Name Behind the School
George L. Graziadio, Jr. (1920-2002)
Founder of the Graziadio School of Business
A tireless entrepreneur, banker, and community sponsor, George L. Graziadio, Jr. was a distinctive businessman who lived by his personal motto: TNT – Today, Not Tomorrow. A legendary real estate developer and banker in Southern California for more than 50 years, George L. Graziadio, Jr. was constantly driven to do more, and always do better.
If better is possible, then good is not enough.
A Different Perspective on Business
For more than 50 years, George L. Graziadio, Jr. did business on his terms. Transitioning from a successful real estate business to banking because he had the belief that he could offer the Los Angeles community a better business bank, Graziadio and his partner formed Imperial Bank with $1.25 million in private investment capital. The bank grew to have over $8 billion in assets solely through internal growth and without acquisitions, with $600 million in capital reserves.
I'd prefer to make 10 $10,000 loans than one $100,000 loan. That way you have 10 customers who go tell 10 other business people about you.
Imperial Bank developed a national presence in emerging growth industries with branches across the United States. Its entertainment division became the largest financier of feature motion pictures in the world with Mr. Graziadio serving as chairman of the board, CEO, and president. In 2000, Imperial Bancorp merged with Comerica, Inc. and featured combined assets of approximately $50 billion.
A Commitment to Community and Education
In 1996, Pepperdine University renamed its business school the George L. Graziadio School of Business and Management following the largest business school endowment in America at the time by Mr. Graziadio and his wife Reva.
You earn your living by working, your earn your life by giving.
Today, the Graziadio School is one of the largest business schools west of Chicago and is ranked among the best in the nation for its Executive MBA and Fully Employed MBA programs. More than 2,500 mid-career business professionals currently attend the Graziadio School at seven campuses throughout California and online.
His vision and leadership propelled the Graziadio School to a preeminent position among business schools worldwide. He has had a profound impact at Pepperdine, and he will be missed in countless ways.
~ Andrew K. Benton – President and CEO of Pepperdine University
